If you ask the question “What should I choose a studio kit?” Even to the most experienced photographer, for sure, this will confuse him. Discussions will begin that are incomprehensible to a beginner: that they say you need softboxes, four all-in-one monoblocks, radio synchronizers, and then you need to look at what to photograph, what depends on what to buy for use. And the peak of reasoning can even become that to start, they say, is generally better with one illuminator. Having in his arsenal only one illuminator, a beginner will quickly figure out, understand and determine what equipment for a photo studio and what kind of light he needs to buy, and how professionals deal with studio lighting in general.

But many years of sales experience suggests that the requirements of beginners who want to join the studio shooting are simpler:

small but sufficient power of devices;
universality;
low price.
It’s rare that someone will immediately say: “I will be engaged only in subject photography, and portraits are not interesting to me.” The neophyte wants to try all kinds of studio photography. What then to choose a set of equipment for a photo studio? What to prefer – a set of pulsed light or constant? The main thing is to ask the right questions. So, the main questions that you need to answer yourself are as follows:

budget amount;
what is your camera;
how skillful you are.
The available budget will tell you which class of devices to choose, the quality and quantity of accessories. The camera, and the ability to use it, helps to determine which one to choose – constant or pulsed light. If the possession of photographic skills can be improved quite quickly, then changing the camera with a small budget is often critical.

Let’s look at the issue in more detail.
If you have a compact camera that “cannot” shoot in manual mode and does not have a hot shoe, then only constant light is suitable for shooting in a studio. Or, before you buy studio equipment, you have to change the camera to SLR. Do not look for workarounds, you do not coordinate the pulsed light with your soap box. It will be a torment!

If you do not yet know what shutter speed, aperture and manual mode are, you are quite happy that everything can be done on the camera with a single button – your choice, again, should be only constant light.

How to make a choice?

Today, the choice is two things.

Firstly, the price / quality of studio lighting. In principle, as in any production, and among manufacturers of studio equipment there are: justifiably well-known brands; popular brands; there are new, little-known, but high-quality.

Secondly, an important factor is the functionality of the illuminators. From this point of view, there are also a lot of parameters that affect functionality. It is enough to give a simple example. The most famous parameter of any illuminator is power adjustment. So, even not all devices have it, but this is one of the main parameters that helps the photographer control the light. Be it pulsed light or continuous. The presence of adjustment is a definite plus, but it is also necessary to pay attention to the depth of adjustment. On the simplest, amateur devices, you can often see the value of 1/8 of full power, modern professional illuminators already have 1/128. And if 1/8 allows you to control the light within 4 apertures, then 1/128 to 8 apertures.

That’s why, even a seemingly powerful, but unregulated light source from a well-known manufacturer, it may not be much more interesting to work in a studio for a building spotlight.
